What to Expect with Dentures

Dentures are a great smile solution for those who have lost all or most of their teeth. However, getting dentures takes some time to adjust. So, in order to make your denture experience as positive as possible, it’s important that you know what to expect. Keep reading to find out what you should know before restoring your smile with any type of denture.

What to Expect with Dentures:

  • At first, your new denture may feel awkward or bulky. Over time, you’ll get used to the feeling of having your full smile back.
  • Be patient. Inserting and removing your denture requires practice.
  • Never force your partial denture into place, especially by biting. This could bend or break the clasps.
  • Follow our dentist’s instructions. We will tell you how long the denture should be worn and when you should remove it.
  • At first, you may need to wear your partial denture all the time. While this might not be the most comfortable scenario, it’s the fastest way to determine areas that need adjustment.
  • If your denture puts too much pressure on a certain area, you’ll experience soreness in that area. Our dentist can adjust the partial denture to fit more comfortably. After making adjustments, our dentist will likely recommend you take the partial denture out before going to bed and replace it in the morning.
  • Eating should become more enjoyable after getting dentures. Start with soft foods that are cut into small pieces, chewing on both sides of the mouth to maintain even pressure. Avoid foods that are extremely sticky or hard, including gum.
