What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure that removes the infected pulp in the center of a tooth. Tooth decay begins with the pulp—composed of tissue, blood vessels, and nerve tissue. When decay is prevalent, sharp pain and sensitivity may begin to set in.

Do I Need a Root Canal?

You may be a candidate for a root canal procedure if you are experiencing:

  • Tooth discoloration (darker color)
  • Severe tooth pain
  • Cold or heat sensitivity
  • Tender gums

Treatment

An initial evaluation with our specialists will determine your candidacy for a root canal procedure. An x-ray and digital images of your teeth may be taken to get a better idea of the location of the decaying tooth.

On the day of the procedure, local anesthesia is applied to the treated area. A drill is used to remove the infected pulp and clean the tooth canal. After pulp removal, the area is sealed with gutta percha—a rubber-like substance for maximum closure. If you need a dental crown, this will be placed on top of the decayed tooth.
